Bucca Dhu – Black Bucca

In Cornish legend, the Bucca (proun. BOO-ka) is the name of a Cornish sea god known for rescuing sailors and fishermen (although this is disputed). Later myth transformed the descriptions of the Bucca into a lesser fey: a trickster or hobgoblin.

In the nineteenth-century folklore collections Bucca seems to have featured in two forms, Bucca Gwydn (White Bucca) and Bucca Dhu (Black Bucca). Bucca seems to be the subject of food offerings placed on the beach (often fish or in the spilling of ale and bread crumbs. It was customary to refer to storms that emanated from a south westerly direction, as “Bucca calling”, sailors and fishermen also believe that Bucca’s voice carried on the wind.

Check out some of my favorite pics of him here….
