Highlights of Japan Tour (Diamond Princess) 8/24/2017 – Day 1, Part 3

Oh my, this was one of my favorite parts of our trip.  For dinner, we were taken to a lovely restaurant and had probably a 15 course meal of interesting and strange dishes.  Way too much food by the time we got to the end, and then there was no dessert.  Odd!

But the highlight was the performance by a Maiko.  You are probably familiar with the Japanese Geisha entertainers.  In Kyoto, they are called Geiko (gei means “art” while sha translates to “person” and ko to “child”) or Maiko, who are apprentice Geisha.  We were entertained by a lovely 17 year old Maiko, who danced, sang, poured sake, and played a drinking game with us.  She had been in training for about a year and won’t become a Geiko or Geisha until she’s about 20.

Our Maiko was accompanied by a “mama-san” who played the samisen.  We was told that she was a former Geisha.

It was a totally enjoyable evening and a true highlight of our trip to Japan.  We wish you could have been there to enjoy it with us.
