Trip to Bifrost!

  • Posted on April 8, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Over the weekend I took a trip to San Antonio, to visit Pat, the Breeder of our wonderful Newfs.  Bill was gone to a show (when isn’t he?), so it was a great time for Pat and I to get in a good visit.  I usually take one of our Newfs along, both for company, and to let Bill & Pat see one of  ‘their kids’ and check on how they are doing.

Rebel/Rebecca

Rebel/Rebecca

This time it was Rebel’s turn.  Rebel is a beautiful 3 year old brown Newf girl.  If you remember, we were lucky enough to have Rebecca come to live with us about a year and a half ago.  However, as much as we love her, she was definitely no Rebecca.  She has enough of her daddy Gus’ strong will in her to be a handfull at times.  So Rebecca very quickly became Rebel.

A long drive finally over, we made it to San Antonio and Rebel was definitely ready for a break after the long drive.  So was I.

We were thrilled to be greeted at the gate by none other than Momma Shannon herself.

Momma Shannon is the lovely foundation bitch of Bifrost.  She is also the grandmother/great-grandmother of all 4 of our babies.  She is such a sweet and loving dog and I love spending time with her.  She’s had some health problems lately, but she got up from her resting place and came over to greet us and to welcome Rebel back home.  I was thrilled to see her doing so well.  I spent a lot of time rubbing her back, scratching her ears and just talking to her about her ‘babies’ that live with us.

I got to visit with sweet little 10 week old River, who’s sisters and brother had just left her to go to their forever homes.  She was definitely missing them, but eager to play and be loved.  She is staying with Bill & Pat.. so I hope to get to see her again soon.  She had been out playing all morning, so she’s not perfectly groomed, but she was a lovebug!

Overall the visit was way too short, but so much fun!  Thanks Pat for having me!  See you again soon I hope!

I think the best part of the weekend was getting to play with the puppies.. but I think I’ll save that for another post.

The best part about going away is coming to be with my own dogs.  Little RuShou was very glad to see me come home.

Ellen in Puppyland!

Last weekend, I got to spent time with a litter of 8 – 3 weekold Newf puppies. At birth they weight about a pound and then gain about a pound a week. So the little guys here weighed about 3 pounds.  I’m holding Brown and black, he may be my favorite.. as also may be Red and Black, Blue and White, Yellow and Ombre…. oh, darn it, they are just ALL my favorites.  I can’t help it!

The momma of these cute little guys is Keoma vom Allgauer-Bar (Keoma).

I love puppies so much.  But I’ve never had the opportunity to actually spend time with any that are this small.  For a Newf lover, this was awesome.  It involved a lot of protection for the puppies’ health –  common sense things like leaving shoes outside and washing hand before handling, but they are so very, very sweet.  You could actually begin to see their individual personalities coming out.

Keoma and the babies

Keoma is a very good momma and the puppies definitely knew it was dinnertime when Keoma got in the whelping box.  The pushing and shoving, along with the small muffled sucking sounds was so much fun.  Keoma would check them all out and checkout the whelping box to be sure it was all in order before she would settle down.  Occasionally I got to help a puppy find it’s way to the dinner nipple, but mostly they did it on their own.  I’m sure a smaller litter is easier and a larger litter must be insanity trying to be sure everyone eats enough.

I think this little girl is my favorite.

Then little yellow and black stood so firm on his tiny legs… he must be my favorite.

After eating, they would stretch out.. or curl up with their full little tummies for some serious snoozing, just like little Yellow and Green here.

Occasionally, 10 week old River would stop by and say hi to the babies.  She definitely can’t wait til they get big enough for her to play with as she is missing her brother and sisters who just went to their forever family homes.  Here cute little Red and Black is checking out his/her??  big cousin.
Mini Wrestling Match

Mini Wrestling Match

Little Blue and White and Big guy Brown and Black are having a miniature wrestling match.  It was so cute to watch.  One of them would open their mouths to chew on the other and most of the time they would just fall over.  Here, they seem to be just pushing against each other.
*Please forgive me if I got boys and girls wrong, there were just so many of them.
They are all so cute and I feel so fortunate I was able to spend some time with such tiny darlings.  I know the future puppy families will be very excited about getting one of these cute little guys or girls.
Thank you Pat & Bill for letting me spend time with them.
Hugs.. Ellen

Who I Am!

  • Posted on April 5, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I am Inez’ grand-daughter, The spitting image of my father,

And when the day is done, my husband’s still my biggest fan.

Sometimes, I’m clueless and I’m clumsy, But I’ve got friends who love me.

And they know just here I stand. It’s all a part of me, and that’s who I am.

(adapted with thanks from Jessica Andrews song, “Who I Am”)

So my question to you today, do you know who you are?
